Human Canvases

Painting on Moving Canvases:

As a body and face painter Tara Joy unites her love for art with her love for children, people, theatre and festivities. She enjoys the immediate joy and dynamic interaction that she gains from painting on human canvases. Similarly to her portraits, when Tara paints people, she aims to bring out their beauty and uniquely interesting features, characters and colour tones.

The Gift to Paint a Smile

Because of her love of children and inspiring the imagination, when she does face painting at an event she dresses in fantastical costumes in order to make the whole experience more magical and memorable. She paints people of all ages and varies the styles according to the occasion. Yet even her more conventional face painting subjects such as animals, pirates, day of the dead and superheroes are imbued with a quirky use of colour and pattern that are often made to fit with the cloths and characteristics of the individuals.

Therapeutic Art

Tara has done facepainting for many years and approaches it like a piece of interactive, theatrical art. She loves the impermanence of each painting and the challenge of creating a design that brings out something special in each person who she paints. She finds it fascinating to see the confidence and enthusiasm that a person can gain after being painted. Many people tell her that the overall experience is therapeutic and very relaxing.

Brush Strokes and Paint Brands

Tara never paints the same design twice although she may paint similar designs if the theme is popular. For example felines and unicorns are often popular so she often paints variations of these. She especially likes to paint improvised designs and patterns based on the person’s features, colour schemes and clothes. From this, she has formulated her own particular style that uses less paint than usual and involves striking brush strokes, strong contrasts, lots of white and empty spaces. Because of the prevalence of empty spaces and white it is also often relatively easy to remove. The main face-paint brand that she uses is Grimas yet she also sometimes uses Snazaroo. She chose these brands because after some research she decided that they were least likely to cause allergic reactions and which have also not been tested on animals.
